THE ROTUNDA – AN HISTORICAL TIMELINE

15–19 South Street, Dorking, Surrey RH4 2LE

1887

The site that would later become known as The Rotunda was part of the Butter Hill House (Rose Hill House) estate. In 1887, this portion of land was transferred to Miss Frances Newland, separating it from the main estate.

1890s

The plot developed into a commercial premises known as Rotunda Stores. By the mid-1890s it housed the Rotunda Ironmongery Stores, run by Saubergue & Co., selling hardware, household goods, and general merchandise.

1909

Following the death of Frances Newland, the property was auctioned. At this time The Rotunda was let to the Dorking Literary & Scientific Institute and used as a public reading room and meeting space.

1919

A conveyance divided the wider estate, and the Dorking Motor Company Ltd. acquired The Rotunda. This marked the start of its transition into an automotive space.

1928

The current Rotunda building was constructed, a curved semi-circular structure with a sweeping glazed frontage. The design reflected late-1920s modernist style and provided the Dorking Motor Company with a contemporary showroom.

Early 1930s

The building operated as a motor showroom and garage, with significant customer traffic on South Street.

Late 1930s

The motor company vacated and the Rotunda was divided into three independent retail units:

• No. 15 – Fancy goods, hosiery and wool

• No. 17 – Pet and livestock supplies

• No. 19 – The Wel-Don Shoe Repair Depot

1940s–1960s

The Rotunda continued as a small arcade of local shops. Its curved front became a distinctive feature of the town centre.

Late 20th Century

The units were later merged and used as a single large shop. It became home to Dorking Domestic Appliances, a long-established appliance and electronics retailer remembered by generations of local residents.

2017

The appliance store ceased trading and the business formally closed. The building became vacant, awaiting a new occupant.

Late 2024

Preparations began for a full transformation of The Rotunda into the new home of Teresa Weller Hair Art. Initial planning, design work, and early interior stripping took place during this stage.

January to September 2025

The building underwent a comprehensive renovation, including

• full interior redevelopment

• electrical and plumbing upgrades

• a complete redesign tailored for a luxury salon

• restoration and cosmetic enhancement of the Rotunda’s historic curved façade

The renovation was completed September 2025.

November 2025

The official launch party for the new Rotunda salon took place, celebrating the reopening of the iconic building after a year-long transformation. This event marked the start of the building’s newest chapter as a high-end, award-winning hair and beauty destination.
